Training at Radleys Grooming Academy

We understand that choosing a dog grooming qualification is a significant decision. Below are answers to some of the questions prospective students regularly ask.

Do I need previous dog grooming experience?

Not for most of our beginner qualifications.

The Level 3 Diploma, Level 3 Certificate, Level 3 Introduction Award and Level 2 Grooming Assistants Award are suitable for learners without previous professional grooming experience.

Our fast-track route is only suitable for experienced groomers who can provide evidence of their existing knowledge and practical ability.

 

Can I begin directly at Level 3?

Yes. You do not need to complete a Level 2 qualification before beginning the iPET Network Level 3 Diploma, Certificate or Introduction Award.

You will need to be capable of working at the required level and safely participating in practical grooming activities.

 

Which qualification should I choose?

The right qualification depends on your career goals, previous experience and the amount of practical training you need.

As a general guide:

• The Level 3 Introduction Award provides a short introduction to grooming.

• The Level 2 Award develops skills needed to support a professional groomer.

• The Level 3 Certificate includes coat preparation and an introduction to styling.

• The Level 3 Diploma is the most comprehensive route for aspiring professional groomers.

• The fast-track Diploma is designed for experienced groomers seeking formal recognition.

Are the iPET Network qualifications regulated?

Yes. The iPET Network qualifications offered by Radleys are regulated qualifications.

The relevant qualification number and guided-learning details are shown on each individual course page.

Our separate practical-only training courses are not regulated qualifications and will always be described clearly as such.

 

Will I receive a qualification or a certificate of attendance?

Students who successfully complete all requirements of an iPET Network qualification will receive the relevant regulated qualification certificate after assessment, quality assurance and certification have been completed.

Students attending a non-regulated practical course may receive a Radleys certificate of completion or attendance. This is not the same as achieving a regulated qualification.

 

Is training practical or classroom-based?

Our dog grooming courses combine practical training with the theory knowledge required by the qualification.

Students work with real dogs in our professional salon and may also complete written work, portfolio evidence, discussions and assessments.

Some theory work will need to be completed at home.

 

Will I work with real dogs?

Yes. Practical learners work with real dogs representing different breeds, sizes, coat types and grooming requirements.

The number and variety required will depend on the qualification.

All practical work is completed with tutor guidance and supervision, with the dog’s welfare as the highest priority.

 

Do I need to provide my own model dogs?

Dogs are normally arranged through the academy for learners attending practical training at Radleys.

Students may occasionally be asked whether they know a suitable dog, but you should not arrange or bring a dog without prior agreement.

Fast-track learners completing evidence or assessments in their own salon may need to arrange suitable dogs themselves.

 

How large are the classes?

We specialise in one-to-one and small-group learning.

Group size may vary according to the course, dogs attending and training activity, but our aim is to maintain a supportive environment where students can receive individual guidance.

How long are the courses?

Course length varies according to the qualification.

Our principal practical qualifications include:

• Level 3 Introduction Award – 5 training days

• Level 2 Grooming Assistants Award – 10 training days

• Level 3 Certificate – 15 training days

• Level 3 Diploma – 30 training days

Do you offer full-time and part-time training?

Yes, full-time, part-time and flexible attendance may be available, depending on the qualification and current timetable.

All learners must complete the required guided-learning hours and attend their agreed practical training days.

Can I complete the course during evenings or weekends?

Availability varies according to the course and academy timetable.

Regulated qualifications have specific guided-learning and practical requirements, so not every course can be completed entirely through occasional evening or weekend attendance.

We will discuss realistic attendance options with you before enrollment.

 

Is there work to complete at home?

Yes. Most qualifications include theory and portfolio work that must be completed alongside practical training.

The amount will vary according to the qualification. Your tutor will explain the requirements and provide guidance and feedback.

 

Are there any formal examinations?

The iPET Network dog grooming qualifications we offer are assessed through practical observation, coursework and portfolio evidence rather than a formal written examination.

You must still demonstrate that you have achieved all required practical and theoretical standards.

 

What happens if I struggle with part of the course?

Learning a new practical skill takes time, and it is normal to find some areas more challenging than others.

Your tutor will provide feedback and help you identify what needs further practice. Students are expected to engage with feedback, attend regularly and complete the required work.

Additional training or assessment time may sometimes be needed and could involve an additional cost.

 

Can reasonable adjustments be made?

Please tell us about any disability, medical condition or learning need that may affect your training or assessment.

Where possible and permitted by the qualification, we will discuss appropriate support or reasonable adjustments with you.

Any adjustment must still allow the required knowledge and practical competence to be assessed fairly.

 

What happens if I miss a training day?

Regular attendance is essential.

If you cannot attend, you must contact the academy as soon as possible. Missed days may need to be rearranged and could affect your completion date or involve an additional charge.

What time does training start?

Your confirmed training times will be provided before the course begins.

Students should arrive promptly and be ready to begin at the agreed time. Late arrival can reduce practical learning time and may affect planned assessments.

 

What should I wear?

Students should wear suitable grooming clothing and comfortable, closed-toe footwear appropriate for practical salon work.

Full clothing and equipment guidance will be included in your joining information.

 

Do I need to buy grooming equipment?

Professional equipment is available for use during training at the academy.

Please speak to us before purchasing your own tools. We can advise you about suitable equipment and may be able to provide access to academy or student discounts.

Whether a personal kit is required will be explained in the information for your chosen course.

 

Is parking available?

Yes. Parking is available for students attending Radleys Grooming Academy.

You must register your vehicle using the parking system every day you attend. Instructions will be provided before your first day.

 

Is accommodation available?

We do not currently provide student accommodation.

There are hotels and other accommodation options within travelling distance of the academy. Please wait until your course dates have been confirmed before making a non-refundable booking.

 

How much do the courses cost?

Prices vary according to the qualification and delivery route.

Do you offer payment plans or finance?

Payment or finance options may be available for selected courses.

Any finance agreement is subject to status, eligibility, approval and the lender’s terms and conditions.

Is the deposit refundable?

Deposit, cancellation and refund arrangements are explained in the academy’s student terms and conditions.

Please read these carefully before making payment. A place is not confirmed until the required paperwork and deposit have been received.

 

Will I be guaranteed a job after qualifying?

No training provider can guarantee employment or business success.

The qualifications are designed to help you develop and formally demonstrate relevant skills and knowledge. Your future success will also depend on factors including continued practice, experience, professional conduct and business planning.

 

Can I open my own grooming business after qualifying?

Many learners complete the Level 3 Diploma with the intention of becoming self-employed or opening a salon.

The Diploma includes a unit covering the planning and operation of a small canine business. However, you will remain responsible for researching insurance, premises, local requirements, tax, pricing and other business responsibilities.

 

Can I visit the academy before enrolling?

Visits must be arranged in advance because practical grooming and assessments may be taking place.

Alternatively, we can arrange a telephone conversation to discuss the course and answer your questions.
