Training at Radleys Grooming Academy is designed to be practical, personal and supportive.

You will learn within a professional grooming salon, work with real dogs and receive guidance from an experienced grooming tutor and assessor.

Our one-to-one and small-group approach means you will have opportunities to ask questions, practise techniques and receive individual feedback throughout your training.

Your First Day

Starting a new course can feel both exciting and daunting. We aim to make your first day welcoming and well organised.

When you arrive, we will introduce you to:

• Your tutor and other learners

• The academy and salon facilities

• Health and safety procedures

• Salon routines

• Professional equipment

• Safe working practices

• The structure of your qualification

• Your theory work and portfolio

• The support available to you

 

Your course confirmation will explain your arrival time, what to wear, what to bring and where to park.

You are always welcome to ask questions if you are unsure about anything.

 

Learning with Real Dogs

Practical experience is an essential part of becoming a confident dog groomer.

Students work with real dogs representing different:

• Breeds

• Sizes

• Coat types

• Coat conditions

• Ages

• Temperaments

• Grooming requirements

 

Working with a variety of dogs helps you understand that grooming is not simply about following one set process. You will learn to assess each dog and adapt your handling, equipment, products and grooming plan accordingly.

Every dog’s welfare, comfort and safety remain our highest priority.

 

A Typical Practical Training Day

Every day may be slightly different depending on the dogs attending and the skills being covered.

A practical day may include:

1. Preparing your work area and equipment

2. Welcoming the dog and discussing the planned groom

3. Carrying out a visual health check

4. Assessing the coat and planning the service

5. Bathing and preparing the coat

6. Drying, brushing and combing

7. Clipping, scissoring or hand-stripping as appropriate

8. Completing finishing details

9. Cleaning equipment and the work area

10. Receiving feedback and recording evidence

 

Some days may also include demonstrations, theory discussions, portfolio work or practical assessments.

 

Practical Skills

The skills you develop will depend on your chosen qualification, but training may include:

• Safe handling and positioning

• Canine health checking

• Bathing and product selection

• Drying different coat types

• Brushing and combing

• Coat preparation

• Nail trimming

• Clipper techniques

• Scissor techniques

• Blending

• Hand-stripping

• Styling different breeds

• Salon hygiene and biosecurity

 

Your tutor will explain and demonstrate techniques before supporting you as you begin to practise them.

 

Individual Tutor Support

Everyone develops practical skills at a different pace.

Our small training groups allow your tutor to observe your work, identify areas for development and provide feedback suited to your individual needs.

Dog grooming qualifications include theoretical knowledge as well as practical training.

Depending on your course, you may study areas such as:

Some theory and portfolio work may need to be completed at home. Your tutor will explain the requirements, provide guidance and offer feedback throughout your qualification.

 

Assessment

Assessment takes place throughout your course and may include:

• Practical demonstrations

• Photographic evidence

• Written questions and coursework

• Professional discussions

• Portfolio evidence

 

You will be told when an activity forms part of your formal assessment.

Feedback will help you understand what you have achieved and what you need to develop before progressing.

 

Our Training Facilities

Training takes place at our professional grooming salon and academy in Crownhill, Milton Keynes.

Students have access to professional facilities and equipment, including:

• Grooming tables

• Professional bathing facilities

• Drying equipment

• Clippers and grooming tools

• Coat-preparation equipment

• Professional grooming products

• Theory and classroom space

 

You will also learn how to clean, maintain and use equipment safely.

 

What to Wear and Bring

Before starting, you will receive full information about clothing and equipment.

Students should be prepared to wear:

• Suitable grooming clothing

• Comfortable, closed-toe footwear

• Clothing appropriate for practical work

You may also be asked to bring:

• A notebook

• Pens

• A phone or camera for portfolio evidence

• Your theory materials

• Lunch and refreshments

• Any personal equipment agreed with your tutor

Parking

Parking is available for students attending the academy.

Students must register their vehicle using the parking system every day they attend. Full instructions will be provided before your first day.
